President’s Update : May 2019
PRESIDENT’S UPDATE : MAY 2019
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Guyana Help The Kids (GHTK), we are pleased to introduce you to our new name and official logo. As part of GHTK’s Strategic Plan, it was decided that with the move to expand our activities in the Eastern Caribbean, it would be beneficial to change our name and logo to reflect this move. At the beginning of April, we received official approval from Corporations Canada of our request to change our name to “GHTK (GIVING HEALTH TO KIDS)”. We are grateful for the work and guidance of HemdatSawh and Terry Sawh for their leadership in assisting the organization with this name change. As you can imagine, it involved several documents to be completed involving many hours of work and follow-up with the various government bodies.
“Guyana Help The Kids” reflected the work we have done in Guyana since the organization was established in 2007. It is fair to say that we have succeeded beyond our wildest dreams in what we have been able to achieve. As an organization, it was always our intent to not only establish educational programs, provide much needed medical equipment and provide mentorship programs to those caring for children but, most importantly, to ensure that everything we did was sustainable and was done in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Hospitals in Guyana.
Many of you who receive this Update have been with us from the beginning, and I am sure you feel the same pride that we do in knowing that our efforts have made a difference in the lives of so many young children, who now have a life and a future because of your support.
We still have much to do in Guyana and we will not abandon our programs and services there; indeed we have learnt much from our colleagues who live and work in Guyana, who are as excited as we are to realize the next steps in the evolution of our organization.
As mentioned in our April Update, we continue to work with the Ministry of Health in Antigua to sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU); GHTK has been warmly received for the expertise and guidance we can now bring to Antigua in supporting existing programs and helping them to expand and improve their infant mortality.
GHTK is also very fortunate to have the expertise and commitment of Mr. Kelly Pearce, who joined the Board in 2011. Kelly, formerly a Respiratory Therapist by training and business owner for a medical equipment company, has been instrumental in obtaining NICU Equipment donations for Guyana and most recently Antigua. In our recent trip to Antigua in March 2019, Kelly and I were able to bring the following donations to Antigua: supply of useful disposable infant care accessories donated by Neotech Inc. of California (though most of these supplies are commonly used in NICUs in North America, they are new to Antigua); 24 Pocket Air aerosol medication nebulizers (state of the art) along with replacement medication cups – these are used in the Paediatric Ward to deliver aerosol medications for children suffering from respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchiolitis etc (all donated by Kelly personally).
The GHTK Board has also approved the following equipment to be ordered for donation to St. John’s Hospital: 2ea UP7000 Multi parameter wall mounted NICU monitors; 2ea Pumani Bubble CPAP systems with extra circuits; 1 ea PC66B Handhand Pulse/Oximeter with neonatal sensor; 1 ea New/Demo Bilicare Bilirubin Non Invasive Monitor.
It is hard to believe that the above noted equipment is taken for granted in NICUs and Paediatric Wards in Canada, but is life saving for babies in countries like Antigua and Guyana. We have also purchased equipment for Guyana – more about that next month!
We are also very excited to let you know that we are holding our first ever Neonatal Conference in Guyana on June 1 – 2, 2019 with participants from throughout the country and with an International Faculty. We will share the highlights with you in our June Update.
Dr. Winsome Scott is the President of the local chapter of GHTK in Guyana and a Graduate of the Paediatric Residency Program. We are so pleased to let you know that Dr. Scott has been accepted into a Neonatal Fellowship Program at McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton. This is a reflection of the quality of the GHTK Residency Program and Dr. Scott’s leadership and her own ongoing commitment to learning ….. congratulations Dr. Scott.
We again ask you to mark down the date of Saturday, November 2, 2019 in your calendars. That is the date of GHTK’s Annual Gala, which we hope you will attend. The Theme for this Year’s Event is “Masquerade” and the Gala will be held at the Paramount Event Centre in Woodbridge. More details in our June Update.
As always, our goal is to provide you, our supporters, with regular updates on our activities and we welcome your feedback and questions always.
Dr. Narendra Singh, President GHTK
